DocuWare AG started out as DOCUNET GmbH AG, which was founded on October 27, 1988, in Germering (near Munich), Germany. The founding president was Jürgen Biffar. Mr. Biffar co-managed the company with his colleague, Thomas Schneck, who became the President of Sales in 1990. In August 2000, DOCUNET AG was renamed DocuWare AG.
DocuWare outsourced parts of its development to Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1999. In 2016, Nemetschek OOD (Bulgaria) employed 42 people to work on the DocuWare product. Today, DocuWare holds a 20 percent stake in Nemetschek OOD. Other subsidiaries can be found in Spain, France, and the United Kingdom. There are two headquarters of the company today: one in Germering and the other in New Windsor (New York, USA).
In 2017, Toshiba TEC announced the release of a suite of document workflow software to simplify integrated document management. The software enabled the seamless integration of Toshiba Multifunctional Products (MFPs) from the e-BRIDGE Next series into the industry-leading document management system, DocuWare. Smart, digitalized document processing boosts overall efficiency by eliminating the need to maintain paper-based document workflows. Dr. Michael Berger, formerly DocuWare’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and Max Ertl, formerly its Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), took over the company’s management on January 1, 2019. In August 2019, DocuWare was acquired by Ricoh. DocuWare, as a wholly-owned subsidiary, maintains its independence and continues to focus on developing proven ECM solutions and expanding its global partner network.
